Abstract
The French gendarmerie was created in 1790 out of a fear of crime and disorder and a desire to establish a new way to maintain civil order. Although many countries have used it to develop their own national law enforcement organizations, each country has adjusted the service to fit its own culture, people, and particular law enforcement needs. The article reviews and compares a number of these organizations and looks at the impact of the changes from the rural to the urban setting of the development of the French gendarmerie and the organizations developed by its neighbors. 3 tables and 45 notes
