Abstract
The Chilean police force is unique in Latin America as it is a centralized, military-branch, national force. In addition to the weaker influences from outside the country, the main influences that prompted this type of organization were the particular political, military, and modernization influences in the country at the end of the last century. The article reviews these internal as well as the external influences. 22 notes and 21 references
