This article examines the July 18, 1991 law that made the Belgian police a civilian law enforcement organization.
Abstract
As of January 1992, the Belgian gendarmerie was no longer a military force for law enforcement under the Ministry of National Defense. The Belgian gendarmerie, established in 1795 as a military organization, was now under the leadership of the Ministry of Interior with the participation of the Ministry of Justice where criminal investigations were concerned. The article reviews the historical background that led up to the law, the details of the law, and the effects of the law on the gendarmerie and its power. 1 graph and 10 notes
