The article reviews how the British Army, rather than a separate military police organization, has always filled the need for a special, internal security riot force in the United Kingdom.
Abstract
The article illustrates how the British Army maintains order in Northern Ireland yet questions the legality of using a military force to maintain civilian order. Two contradictory definitions of paramilitarism, by Jefferson and Waddington, are also reviewed regarding military tactics used by civilian police to maintain order. 46 notes and 17 references
