Tables present data on the number of persons held in custody in eight jurisdictions of Australia during June 1992 as well as the number of sentenced prisoners received in each jurisdiction and those in custody on the first day of the month.
Abstract
A total of 5,785 males and 317 females were held in custody in New South Wales as of June 1992, an increase of 331 inmates over June 1991. Those 121 prisoners on work release are included in this number. Victoria reports the second largest number of prisoners, 2,133 male and 114 female inmates. However, the number of prisoners declined by 52 since June 1991. Daily averages tended to remain stable in all jursidictions but New South Wales whose rates per 100,000 population are about 50 percent higher than they were in the mid-1980s. 1 figure and 3 tables
