The National Institute of Corrections (NIC) has two property conveyance programs to help State and local governments seeking to identify property available for conversion to corrections use to assist in alleviating prison overcrowding.
Abstract
This property includes surplus Federal property and properties whose ownership reverted to the Federal government via the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) following the collapse of savings and loan institutions across the countries. State and local units of government with correctional needs are eligible to acquire Federal surplus real property for correctional purposes, without cost, under the Federal Surplus Real Property Transfer Program. This program addresses Federal property available for disposal through the General Services Administration. Jurisdictions must submit their applications for property conveyance to the BJA for approval. NIC provides technical assistance and training. Fifteen proposed acquisitions, including three involving jails, have been approved. NIC also provides access to the RTC database, which contains information on all real estate available through the RTC.
