This guide to the survival of law enforcement officers recognizes that virtually all aspects of survival are interrelated and that officers must survive not only the job but also the courts, their families, and other demands placed on them.
Abstract
The guide views survival as an attitude that requires a personal commitment to attain the skills and information needed to meet law enforcement challenges. The guide's recommended procedures and associated illustrations cover such aspects of survival as suspect control, the use of body armor, off-duty survival, police report writing, the use of police shotguns, law enforcement liability, and how to deal with fear and danger. The guide also covers chemical agent use by law enforcement officers, tactical principles and concepts, psychological survival, stresses related to gun use, personal development, police fitness, burnout, law enforcement attitudes, searches, and vehicle stops. In addition, the guide examines procedures for conducting field interviews, defensive tactics, handgun retention, patrol response to hazardous material incidents, courtroom demeanor and testimony, multiple assailants, firearms training, the use of force, and the management of aggressive behavior. Finally, consideration is given to ammunition evaluation, compliance holds, impact weapons, special-purpose police firearms, searching and frisking, police ethics and professionalism, handcuffing, and crowd management.
