Drug case processing in New York City during 1989 was investigated to examine long-term implications of sanctioning decisions, whether the inducement to plead to drug felony charges with a probation sentence ultimately produces a large group of second felony offenders, recidivism rates of defendants receiving different sanctions, and probation violations by drug offenders.
Abstract
The analysis focused on such outcome measures as case disposition, arraignment release status and bail amount, sentence type and amount, and processing time. Significant differences were observed in case disposition patterns according to court type and according to New York City borough. Considerable differences were also noted in release status and sentencing patterns across boroughs. An appendix provides additional information on the sampling design and data elements. 14 references, 30 tables, and 5 figures
