The participants were concerned about unmet needs and crowded conditions, but they enjoyed the challenge of controlling costs, developing creative programs, and improving staff's ability to manage their areas of responsibility. Among the survival skills they had acquired were being flexible, thinking ahead and being a team player, being assertive at appropriate times, being open to new ideas, accepting things they could not change, being a positive role model, and keeping their sense of humor. Sometimes they had to compete with male counterparts who had not yet accepted a female in the corrections setting or any other part of the workforce.
