Contemporary four-wheel-drive sport/utility vehicles (SUVs) are increasingly used by police agencies, because they are comfortable on paved superhighways and secondary roads and also offer the ability to go off the road.
Abstract
The extent of this off-road ability depends somewhat on their power plants, tires, and ground clearances. None are quite as comfortable for the police officer as the traditional patrol car, nor can they match the four-wheel- drive utility vehicle. However, they are a combination of compromises that can do the jobs required with reasonable competence. The Jeep Cherokee Special Service Package is designed for and marketed directly to law enforcement agencies. The Ford Explorer also offers an optional Preferred Equipment Package for law enforcement agencies. Other SUVs include the Chevrolet s-10 Blazer and the Toyota 4Runner.
