The National Judicial Reporting Program (NJRP) collects data biennially from State felony courts in large urban counties to provide national estimates on the number of felony convictions and the types of sentences imposed, as well as detailed criminal histories and information on pretrial processing.
Abstract

The 1990 survey collected data for and tracked for up to one year approximately 14,000 felony cases filed in 39 counties during May 1990. The characteristics of felony defendants studied here included most serious arrest charge, race and sex, and age at arrest. Criminal history factors tabulated in this report included criminal justice status at time of arrest, number of prior arrest charges, and number of prior convictions and prior felony convictions. Pretrial release rates, median bail amounts, and statistics on failure to appear are presented as well. The report covers adjudication rates by outcome and specific arrest offense. The final section summarizes statistics on sentencing, and tabulates time from conviction to sentencing for convicted defendants, most severe type of sentence, and mean and median sentences to incarceration and probation. 24 tables and 1 appendix
