The mission statement indicates that the mission of the Scottish Prison Service is to keep in custody those committed by the courts, to maintain good order in each prison, to care for prisoners with humanity, and to provide prisoners with a range of opportunities to exercise personal responsibility and to prepare for release. For each prison, information is provided on the courts served and the types of inmates kept in custody. Strategic objectives for 1991-92 are presented for each facility, and the progress toward each of the objectives is described. The 1991-92 achievements of the Scottish Prison Service College are also indicated. The operations of headquarters is presented by directorates, which include the Strategy and Planning Directorate, the Human Resources Directorate, the Finance and Information Systems Directorate, and the Prisons Directorate.
