Conference participants looked at why some communities have taken community justice initiatives and others have not, the role of individuals and concerted community action in community survival and the development of community self- reliance, the relationship between community-sponsored justice initiatives and the criminal justice system, and strategies for developing and implementing community justice programs. Conference presentations specifically covered community-initiated crime prevention programs, the role of the media in community justice issues, Canada's Young Offenders Act, circuit courts and the community, strategies for improved police-community relations, and the role of legal aid and native court workers in isolated northern communities. Presentations also examined the sentencing process in small communities, public legal education, self- help groups and volunteers, community self-reliance and responsibility, alcohol and drug abuse prevention and treatment programs, community crime prevention programs, and the management of community justice programs.
