This report describes the programs and activities of the New York City Police Department during 1988.
Abstract
The agency has 37,481 employees, including 23,344 in its patrol service. During 1988, New York City residents called the 911 emergency telephone number more than 8 million times -- for more than 11,000 calls per day. During the year, the department improved communication with the various communities throughout the city, provided positive role models, upgraded performance measures and reset priorities, expanded community policing to 75 precincts, continued to focus on victim services, and worked with community organizations and concerned citizens.
