One program, a presentation/lecture series, offers instruction in basic life skill training to all inmates to assist them in improved socialization. Inmates are exposed to two 50-minute presentation/lectures each designated week night. Small group discussions and question-and-answer periods may also be used. Another program, vocation/business education classes, determines the interests and abilities of inmates and then offers instruction in vocational/business areas tailored to them. The aim of the program is to assist inmates in obtaining employment upon their release. Courses are offered by the Central Carolina Technical College. The third program, basic education program (mini-lab), is intended to increase the literacy levels of the inmates so as to improve their opportunity for employment upon release. Inmates are first tested to determine their literacy level. An instruction/tutor program is then developed for each inmate so as to raise his skills or possibly prepare him for a GED. Information on each program addresses purpose, rationale, description, objectives, time schedule, program length, location, and responsibilities.
