The discussion focused on patterns of alcohol and other drug abuse among homosexuals, important correlates of drug abuse among these populations and subpopulations, how drug prevention programs are addressing the needs of their target populations, and research needs. Among the themes emerging from the symposium were the political influences on research and services related to homosexuals, the diversity among homosexuals, the existence of bisexuals, and the need to understand drug abuse patterns as the basis for effective prevention programs. Prevention panel discussions focused on minorities, youth, and environmental risk. The importance of developing a strong, positive lesbian or gay identity as a buffer against alcohol and other drug abuse problems was highlighted as an essential component in any prevention program.
