Sentencing statistics for Victoria's (Australia) magistrates' courts for 1992 address statistical measures of penalties, suspended sentences, penalties imposed on persons sentenced based on principal offense, and the disposition of offenses and type of penalty imposed for each charged offense.
Abstract
Statistical measures of penalties are based on penalty type (imprisonment, fine, unpaid community work) and are presented in the appropriate unit of count (months, dollars, hours). Sentences are presented by offense; data for each offense cover the minimum sentence, the sentence for the 25th percentile, the median sentence, the sentence for the 75th percentile, and the maximum sentence. The most common penalty, the arithmetic average, and the number of observations (results) are also presented. Data on suspended sentences indicate the number of persons receiving suspended sentences according to the original term by the portion suspended and the number of persons receiving suspended sentences according to the operation period by the portion of the original term suspended. A major section of the report presents the penalties imposed based on principal offenses. Information includes the number of offenders receiving each type of sentence for the particular offense, the total number of offenders sentenced, and the percentage who received custodial sentences. The concluding set of statistics indicates the number of offenders receiving various types of dispositions and the type of penalty imposed for each charged offense. The appendixes list selected Victoria legislation by act numerical order and alphabetical order.
