Following a review of the history of the foundation and a listing of the members of the Board of Trustees and the foundation staff, the report describes the foundation's work for fiscal year 1992. The Children's Program has focused on funding for the use of family preservation workers, who provide intensive in-home support and counseling for families whose children are on the verge of being placed outside the home. The Disadvantaged Youth Program is working with five urban school districts to reform education in the middle grades, and the Homeless Families Program is cooperating with State and city agencies in New York to prevent repeat homelessness among formerly homeless families. The Justice Program is working with three States to develop more balanced, economical, and humane criminal justice systems. Foundation efforts in the Justice Program for 1992 have focused on Alabama and the work of the Sentencing Institute, a nonprofit citizens organization based at Auburn University. With the Sentencing Institute as a resource, Alabama officials are addressing the problem of prison overcrowding through sentencing reform and the development of alternatives to institutionalization.
