This figure represents an increase of 3.1 percent over 1992 statistics. Over 87 percent of the inmates were male, 10 percent were female, and 2.5 percent were juveniles. About 71 percent of the total inmate population were incarcerated for felonies, 21.1 percent for misdemeanors, and 8.1 percent for other reasons. Over half the detainees were being held for trial. The statewide county detention incarceration rate for the reporting period was about 2.5 per 1,000 residents. Several counties had high incarceration rates because they held a large number of inmates for the U.S. Marshals Service. During this month, 13 percent of the counties had average daily inmate populations that exceeded their Department of Corrections-rated capacity.
