TASK FORCE ON SCHOOL VIOLENCE: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

To address the rising level of violence in North Carolina public schools, the governor appointed a task force to address the problem. The group held hearings in six communities across the State to solicit recommendations for making schools safe.
Abstract
The report proposes an agenda that would deal with the problem immediately by addressing the issue of guns and weapons on school property and by removing violent students from the classroom. In the wider context of community and State, enactment of tougher weapons laws and the provision of increased authority to school system officials to deal with violent students would have an appreciable impact on serious violent offenses. To enhance the deterrent value of existing school regulations and State laws, the task force recommends that school administrators, law enforcement authorities, and court officials work together. To have a long-term impact on the level of violence in public schools, the schools will require more resources directed toward prevention and education. Finally, to strengthen the criminal justice system, the task force suggests improving the juvenile code and creating a North Carolina Center for Prevention of School Violence.
