The Commission actively pursued its legislative mandate to investigate and report on all areas of public safety. It addressed a wide area of issues, focusing on prevention, law enforcement, and corrections, both by conducting formal studies and by working with various State and local agencies to resolve specific problems. It used the expertise of professionals from the fields of education, mental health, social services, and many other areas to provide a comprehensive approach to criminal justice planning. Commission staff also participated in many conferences, training sessions, and other activities to keep informed about new developments in the Virginia criminal justice system and to stay aware of the needs of the system and the quality of the service provided to the public.
