A total of 202 of the 410 "probates" admitted to the Southampton Intensive Treatment Center (SITC), a "boot camp incarceration program," have not reoffended.
Abstract
"Probate" pretests and posttests revealed several positive changes. Adult education scores increased by 8.7 percent. Antisocial attitudes declined by 13 percent among probates, and motivation to change increased by 10 percent. Self-deprecating attitudes dropped 13 percent and thought disturbances 8 percent. The expections of the program's value rose 7 percent among probates. Program enhancements include additional training for intensive treatment officers in substance abuse education, continuation of the step-up program that provides assistance in the areas of life skills and employment, and increased availability of community service board staff to resolve substance abuse and mental health problems. Ongoing evaluation of the program over the next 3 years should provide reliable and valid data for management purposes and to measure outcome more systematically. 4 figures and 1 appendix
