Abstract
A brief history of retailing and how it became a magnet for crime begins the discussion. Subsequent chapters consider planning and tools used to critically analyze contemporary security methods, describe legal aspects that provide a foundation for security programs, and emphasize specific vulnerabilities and countermeasures for protecting retail businesses. These include job applicant screening and employee training, protection at the point of sale, internal losses, shoplifting, investigations, store design and physical security, burglary and robbery, and risk management. The final chapter provides an exercise to test knowledge and skill in dealing with the demands of retail security management which can be used as a part of the applicant-screening process for a security position. 64 figures, 148 notes, 4 tables, and 2 appendixes
