The analysis reveals that lengthier pursuits are more common in rural agencies, with 6.5 percent of the urban agency pursuits and 17.3 percent of the rural agency pursuits lasting 11 minutes or more. In addition, 77.7 percent of the urban agency pursuits and 64.5 percent of the rural agency pursuits lasted less than 5 minutes. Urban pursuits were more likely to be instigated by traffic offenses or Federal offense, while rural agency pursuits were more likely to be instigated by reckless driving or driving under the influence. Rural pursuits were more likely to result in arrests and less likely to result in injury or death than were urban agency pursuits. Other aspects of police pursuit driving in Kentucky and other States were also considered. Tables and 2 references
