Information systems for the police and sheriff's departments, the prosecutors' offices, the courts, the marshal's office, probation, the department of motor vehicles, and the county records index were compared. Results revealed that some crucial data elements are in almost all systems, with the information entered separately by each agency. If the systems could share information, the common data elements would have to be entered only once, and the data would be exactly the same in all systems. This would assist in identifying individuals and correlating related information. Because the computer systems contain information on different stages in criminal case processing for the same individual, sharing information is crucial. However, the records index is not a fully integrated information system, and individual inquiries must be made in each system to obtain detailed information on individuals and cases from the records index. The results of this report will be used in planning the redesign and conversion of the ARJIS system. One goal of this effort is to minimize the duplication of information and provide an efficient, cost- effective means of sharing information among law enforcement agencies. Data tables
