This report presents data related to the operation of the South Dakota Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) for calendar years 1990 and 1991.
Abstract
Comparisons were made on the basis of sex, race, reasons for taking drugs, overdose versus non-overdose, disposition, alcohol involvement, and drug class. The charts depict South Dakota hospitals participating in DAWN, the 10 most mentioned therapeutic classes of drugs, and the percent of total mentions broken down by gender and racial group (white and American Indian). Suicide attempt or gesture was the most frequently mentioned reason for taking substances; well over 90 percent of the mentions in both years included in this report were overdoses. About 79 percent of individuals visiting an emergency room with a drug-related diagnosis were admitted to a care facility. The rate of alcohol involvement in these incidents ranged from 29 percent among white females
