Data on the length of time in custody are presented according to various legal history criteria such as commitment offense, felony class category of commitment offense, minimum sentence length, and maximum sentence length. In addition, several tables indicate trends in the length of stay across the years 1987-91. A total of 26,905 releases occurred during the year, including 18,403 inmates released to parole supervision for the first time on the current sentence. Thirty-one percent of the parolees were committed for violent felony offenses, 5 percent for other violent or coercive offenses, 45 percent for drug law offenses, 16 percent for property and other types of offenses, and 2 percent as youthful offenders. The average time served for the parolees was 23.9 months. The average total State prison and jail time in local facilities was 29.4 months. This total time declined from 33.4 months in 1987. Tables
