Mechanical and electronic measures are available to impede entry into a vehicle. Theft from vehicles can also be reduced by ensuring that all new cars have security-coded radios and that in-car entertainment systems are dispersed in modules inside the car. Improved lighting and other security for parking areas, enhanced public education campaigns, and pressure on manufacturers would also reduce vehicle theft. Recommended actions include a government database on auto theft, interagency cooperation to ensure the successful implementation of prevention measures, an evaluation of current antitheft devices, and the use of a voucher or other system to promote the use of an effective and reasonably priced security device.
