Between 1986 and 1991, New York State's total population under custody increased by 49.l7 percent, while the total Hispanic population under custody rose by 62.8 percent.
Abstract
The total number of males and females under custody increased by 46.1 and 150.6 percent, respectively. The number of Hispanic males and females under custody increased by 57.3 and 229.7 percent, respectively. In both 1990 and 1991, the total Hispanic population under custody grew slower than the total population under custody. The native- born Hispanic population increased by 56.l4 percent, or 13.5 percent faster than the total population. Native-born Hispanic males increased by 50.2 percent, and native-born Hispanic females increased by 249.5 percent. Among native- born Hispanics, those born in New York increased by 88.4 percent over the study period. As in 1990, Hispanics born in New York represented the largest population segment in 1991. Foreign-born Hispanics increased by 87.2 percent, or 75.5 percent faster than the total population. In the foreign- born Hispanic population, males increased by 84.4 percent and females by 162.5 percent. The major source of growth for the foreign-born population under custody was the increase in inmates born in the Dominican Republic and Colombia. 9 tables
