Statistics indicate that 5.4 million crimes were recorded by the police in England and Wales in 1992 and that the number of recorded crimes rose from about 1 per 100 population in the 1950's to 10.6 per 100 population in 1992.
Abstract
Of the total number of recorded crimes, 95 percent involved property offenses and 5 percent involved violent or sexual offenses. Just over half of all theft offenses and 25 percent of all recorded crimes involved motor vehicles. The British Crime Survey estimated 15 million crimes against individuals and property in 1991 and indicated that offense reporting to the police rose from 31 percent in 1981 to 43 percent in 1991. Detailed statistical data are provided on crime victims, victim support and compensation, offense types, offender age and sex, police and court action in response to crime, sentencing, and prisons and parole. Data are also included on the Police Service, Prison Service, Probation Service, judiciary, and other criminal justice agencies and on criminal justice system expenditures and crime prevention costs.
