Every member of the ACPO Crime Committee participates in the development of policies that are often of national importance, stretching across a wide range of issues and affecting almost every member of the Police Service. The Crime Committee currently has four subcommittees and 11 working parties or groups, all of which focus on important subjects. Among its achievements, the Crime Committee has developed a user requirement for a national automatic fingerprint recognition system promised by the Home Office for 1996/97, recommended the development of a DNA database similar to fingerprint records, pressed for the regulation of the private security industry, and contributed to the development of the National Criminal Intelligence Service. The Crime Committee sponsors an annual National Drugs Conference, which has been influential in the development and implementation of national policy toward drug control. Other issues with which the Crime Committee has dealt are recidivism while on bail, a tracking system to locate stolen cars, and measures to counter terrorism. The Crime Committee, in the development of police policy, works closely with many departments of the Home Office, the Crown Prosecution Service, and others.
