Data were collected through the North Dakota Uniform Crime Reporting system regarding arrests and incarcerations for driving under the influence (DUI) in 1991. Statistics for the 14-year period between 1978 and 1991 are also presented.
Abstract

The number of DUI arrests increased 6.6 percent from 4,322 in 1990 to 4,607 in 1992. The peak number of DUI arrests occurred in 1982. The State Highway Patrol has been the agency consistently making the largest number of DUI arrests in North Dakota over the reporting period. Statistics regarding the location and date of arrests made by the Highway Patrol in 1991, as well as the average number of DUI arrests and the rate of arrests per 10,000 population, are tabulated. An average of 86 percent of DUI arrests between 1978 and 1991 were of males; juveniles made up less than 2 percent of arrests. The number of adults incarcerated for DUI offenses increased 18.2 percent from 1990 to 1991, and accounted for 23 percent of total adult incarcerations in 1991. While the adult incarcerations are mostly male, the percentage of females imprisoned for DUI has increased. 14 tables and 1 figure
