The text uses the findings of a recent questionnaire survey of 325 accredited police agencies. The analysis concludes that both attitudinal and operational problems have hindered the efforts during the last decade to expand police accreditation. Although the desire for excessively rapid changes has been an adverse factor, the national accreditation initiative still contains the essential components upon which to build a professional community in the field of law enforcement. Issues that should be considered in further efforts include the results and recommendations of previous research, management, regionalization, user understanding versus user friendliness, marketing, research and development, professional assessment teams, and performance-based standards.
