The analysis used data from 15 case studies, background papers, and a literature review. Results indicated that violence against women in the home is widespread, affecting all countries, cultures, social classes, and income groups. However, the problem has received attention only in the last 25 years. As a result, much remains to be understood about the nature, extent, and treatment of family violence. Nevertheless, it is clear that the issue has serious short- term and long-term implications from both an individual and a societal perspective. Many victims suffer serious physical and psychological injury, sometimes even death. In addition, the economic and social costs to the community are enormous. Different solutions may be appropriate for different women and for different cultural contexts. Specific strategies, a more responsive legal system, public education, and improved research are all needed. Chapter notes and 266 references
