New York City's Department of Juvenile Justice provides custody and care for children in detention, and it operates aftercare, prevention, and diversion programs. Regarding secure detention in fiscal year 1992, 4,777 juveniles were admitted. Although the average length of stay was 20 days, 49 percent left within 3 days, and 66 percent left within 10 days. A total of 1,595 juveniles were admitted to nonsecure detention in fiscal year 1992, and the average length of stay was 19 days. The nonsecure system includes 11 group homes. Regarding aftercare, 90 percent of the juveniles are enrolled in school and attend regularly. Overall, the aftercare program is designed to provide support for children as they return to their families and communities. Case managers work with children for up to 6 months. Information is also provided on programs to maintain and develop family ties, community-based alternative programs, court services, and agency-wide initiatives.
