Participants agreed that security risks of modern computing are often ignored, despite a few well-publicized intrusions and viruses, and that intentional abuses involving sensitive information, such as industrial espionage, are becoming important enough to cause national concern. Computer security is especially critical in banks where about $1 trillion daily is transferred electronically and in research and development companies. In general, the incidence of computer viruses is on the rise, and both network intruders and virus writers are becoming more devious. Compounding the computer security threat is the fact that technical measures needed to keep information secure may not be worth the expense. The regulation of data security and the security and vulnerability of computer systems are discussed.
