Abstract
The statewide average daily population totals for April included 29,918 adult males (86.9 percent), 3,530 adult females (10.3 percent), and 970 juvenile offenders (2.8 percent). The overall distribution of male and female inmates remained fairly constant in county detention facilities over the past 5 years. About 71 percent of the total inmate population were incarcerated for felony offenses, compared with 21 percent who were detained for misdemeanor crimes. Offenders held for trial represented 56.5 percent of the inmate population, and approximately 27 percent were sentenced on either felony or misdemeanor crimes. Inmates detained for violation of probation represented slightly over 7 percent of the inmate population. The statewide county detention incarceration rate was 2.6 per 1,000 county residents in April. The average daily inmate populations of eight counties exceeded their Department of Corrections rated capacity. Nearly 20,000 inmates housed in county detention facilities in April were classified as awaiting trial. Of these, 84 percent were awaiting trial for felony offenses, and 16 percent were detained for misdemeanor violations. 4 tables and 6 figures
