Corrections agencies should establish active personnel recruitment programs to ensure that they select honest, qualified staff and to avoid problems in retention, security, and the quality of inmate programs.
Abstract
The first step should be to establish a plan of action that determines whether and why the facility has recruitment or retention problems, what positions to target for recruitment, what applicant pool should be targeted, and what the scope of the program should be. Recruiters should use several channels, including print and radio advertisements and direct mail. Combining these three can be effective. Other useful strategies include advertising on 10-second or 30-second television spots, recruiting on college campuses and at job fairs, and informing others by word of mouth from staff members. To determine the selling approach, the agency should consider the benefits that will make the position attractive and follow up promptly on information requests, using a 24-hour career hotline or other means. The agency must also carefully assess the effectiveness of the recruitment program and adjust the strategy if necessary. Photographs
