This manual provides guidelines for communities and individuals across the Nation who wish to establish proven, cost-effective services for girls and boys in public housing, i.e., Boys and Girls Clubs.
Abstract
A history and overview of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America focus on the mission and program philosophy of the clubs, the challenge of establishing the clubs in public housing, and the advantages such a program provides. A section on the positioning of the club organization for expansion into public housing addresses capacity and commitment, funding and financial stability, commitment to growth and quality services, and the achievement of community acceptance. Guidelines for working with the Housing Authority encompass the development of a working partnership, cerification of the need for a club, the selling of the concept to the Housing Authority, cooperation with the Tenants' Association, a letter of agreement, and the cementing of the relationship for the long term. Other major topics covered are planning and getting underway; site determination, preparation, and maintenance; structure and organizational relationships; management and business practices; staffing; funding and fundraising; program; membership recruitment and retention; marketing and public relations; and community networking. Appended bibliography and other resources, sample budgets, and a directory of Regional Service Centers for Boys and Girls Clubs of America
