Annotation
The aim of an comic book known as "Smack in the Eye" and a cartoon character referred to as "Peanut Pete" is to promote safer drug use and safer sex among England's injecting drug users; the educational program represents an alternative to health education warnings that tell people what not to do without suggesting other options.
Abstract
The comic book's production represents a commitment to engaging with and involving current drug users in the development of materials containing information they want in a style they find attractive. Building on the comic book's success with adults, information materials have been produced for young, recreational drug users using a cartoon character known as "Peanut Pete." The cartoon project deals with such issues as drug-induced paranoia, the danger of using depressant drugs to deal with stimulant-induced anxiety states, and the possibility of heat stroke associated with stimulant drug use. Less than totally supportive political reaction to the cartoon approach is discussed.
