The first article discusses pretrial detention as a measure of last resort, while the second article surveys new strategies criminals have used in recent West European bank robberies. The third article presents a statistical survey and shows that Hungarian clearance rates for murder are far higher than those for other offenses. The fourth article stresses that the Hungarian police must learn from United States criminal procedure to combat international crime in Eastern Europe. Next, the past, present, and future goals of the Hungarian Police College are discussed. The problems of fire prevention and the need for voluntary fire fighters are the topics of the sixth article. The seventh article shows how waves of foreign immigrants have put additional demands on the Hungarian police. The following three articles relate to such diverse topics as the use of polygraphs in criminal justice, police discipline, and traffic accidents. The final article focuses on the crime situation in the Soviet Union in the period of Perestroika.
