The Department of Public Safety at Michigan State University has gradually implemented a community policing program, starting in 1987; the successful program has divided the main campus into six community policing areas, each with its own community police officer (CPO) assigned on a long-term basis.
Abstract
The six CPO's use their own unique talents and innovations to reduce crime in their respective campus areas. A color-coded campus map highlights the six community policing areas and lists the CPO's, their assigned areas, office locations, and direct phone numbers. The CPO's organize and operate Loss Prevention Campus Watch programs in residence halls, Bike Watch programs to involve student volunteers in reducing bicycle theft, and Office Watch programs to involve staff employees in reducing theft and other crimes in university offices. In addition, the CPO's select their own individual community policing project each year. Examples of such projects include youth self-defense training, moped education, cardiopulmonary resuscitation training, bicycle registration, child identification, residence hall receptionist training, alcohol education, and firearm safety. The community policing program at Michigan State University has reduced overall crime, increased trust, and empowered police officers. Further, the program has been implemented without additional funds in an environment of budget cutbacks. 1 figure
