This manual is designed to encourage and assist efforts to start a parent support group that will provide parents with emotional support, information and education, socialization, and advocacy.
Abstract
The manual contains information that can help parents locate family support resources in the community and guidelines on how to start and operate parent support groups. The guidelines detail the importance of identifying a group contact person, finding a suitable meeting place and time, recruiting members, publicizing the group, and formulating discussion group guidelines. Factors to consider in choosing discussion topics are noted, along with suggested meeting activities. The need for effective group communication and sensitivity to group problems is stressed. A chart is provided that identifies parenting support resources. Appendixes also contain valuable resource materials on parenting support and group meetings.
