This research project was undertaken by the Victorian Community Council Against Violence as part of its inquiry into violence in public places to assess the number of sexual assault incidents between 1987 and 1990.
Abstract
The analysis covered all cases of rape, sexual penetration, and incest reported to the police over the 1987-1990 period, but more detailed attention was paid to rape offenses. Data sources included crime reports, arrest reports, and criminal history records. The analysis also focused on offense location, offense reporting to the police, weapons, victim/offender relationship, offender age, offense date, and multiple offenses. The research sample included 2,232 cases of serious sexual offenses reported to the police during the 3-year period. Of this number, 1,473 incidents involved 1,859 offenders where rape was the most serious offense reported. In 597 incidents, sexual penetration involving 610 offenders was the most serious offense reported. In 161 incidents involving 165 offenders, incest was the most serious offense reported. 109 tables
