This manual provides instructor guidelines and curriculum materials for the Parent Time sessions of the PACE (Parent and Child Education) Family Literacy Program, which are designed to engage parents in their own and in their children's learning simultaneously.
Abstract
Specifically, Parent Time learning activities are designed to build parent capacities and parenting competence, to increase parent appreciation of learning and the value of education, and to help parents provide a model of interest in and motivation for education for their children. The curriculum units focus on "Parents as Persons," "Parents as Parents," "Parents as Students," "Parents as Family Members," "Parents as Community Members," and "Parents as Workers." For each session the instructor is provided with session objectives, preparation guidelines, and steps for conducting session activities. Tools for particular session activities are also provided. The assumptions and basic principles of the curriculum are discussed, and the instructor is informed about how to use curriculum activities generally, followed by a discussion of the instructor's role as group facilitator. A 40-item list of recommended reading focuses on books about children and raising children and on working with groups and facilitating adult learning.
