This report on inmates in California in 1991 focuses on new admissions of felons from court and parole violators returned to prison with a new commitment.
Abstract
The number of felon new admissions from court increased by 91.2 percent from 20,543 in 1985 to 39,272 in 1990. During the same period, the number of Mexican-American felon new admissions more than doubled form 6,011 to 14,208. More than half (54.7 percent) of the felon new admissions were under the age of 30 in 1990. The number of felon new admissions for drug law offenses reached an all-time high of 13,741, an increase of 280.7 percent over 1985. Los Angeles accounted for 42.3 percent of the felon new admissions in 1990. The number of parole violators returned with a new commitment increased by 179.1 percent from 5,042 in 1985 to 14,070 in 1990. Almost half (48.5 percent) of these offenders were under age 30. Los Angeles accounted for 45.1 percent of these offenders. Tables and figures
