This report presents statistics on inmate assaults on other inmates and on correctional personnel during 1991 in California.
Abstract
A total of 4,120 inmate incidents occurred in institutions and camps during the year, a decrease of 1.5 percent from 1990. The rate of incidents declined to 4.3 per average daily institutional population, a decline for the seventh consecutive year. The highest rate was 12.7 in 1984. Assaults accounted for 58.8 percent of the incidents. Four male inmates were fatally assaulted, the lowest number since 1970. Nine hundred nineteen assaults on staff took place, of which 32.9 percent involved the use of weapons by inmates. Tables showing trends since 1982 and data for individual institutions
