Abstract
As of December 31, 1991, there were 77,120 California felons receiving parole supervision, an increase of 11,700 since December 31, 1990. Of this number, 90.5 percent were males, and 9.5 percent were females. The largest group of felons on parole were originally committed for controlled substance possession and accounted for 13.7 percent of the population, followed by the group committed for controlled substance possession for sale (9.3 percent). Those committed for robbery accounted for 9.1 percent of the population. The smallest group of felons on parole were originally committed for marijuana possession. Violent offenders accounted for 25 percent of the felon parole population. Over half of the felon parolees were in the 25- to 34-year-old age group. Of the 69,758 male parolees, 20,454 were white, 23,268 were Hispanic, and 22,910 were African American. Region IV accounted for the largest percentage of the felon parole population (32.1 percent). This region covers all southern California from San Bernardino County and the southeastern area of Los Angeles County to the Mexican border. 4 tables
