Title: INFORMATION IS EMPOWERING: DEVELOPING PUBLIC LIBRARY SERVICES FOR YOUTH AT RISK
Author(s): S Weisner
Editor(s): K Scarborough
Date Published: 1992
Annotation: This manual offers ideas and techniques that public librarians can use to improve service to adolescents in their communities
Abstract: The guidelines are based on the assumptions that youth are increasingly at risk of a broad range of social and economic problems and that with training, administrative support, and the effective support of the community, public librarians can expand their role in serving this increasingly vulnerable population. An introduction outlines how libraries in the San Francisco Bay Area improved services to at-risk youth during the Bay Area Youth at Risk Project, which operated from 1990-92 with State funding. The project served Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco counties. It involved six types of activities: (1) providing information about services, (2) young adult collection and facility development, (3) special programs for youth, (4) tutoring programs, (5) community outreach, and (6) involving youth in the library through advisory boards and employment. Step-by-step instructions are giving for planning and implementing programs involving some or all of these activities. Checklists; sample program materials; reference lists; and appended background information, additional guidelines, and program materials
