Huron County is a rural community of 56,240 residents located in north central Ohio; the county has both an agricultural and an industrial base. In 1992, the juvenile court had 3,201 hearings and trials compared with 2,727 in 1991. As the workload and costs increased, the court staff increased its efforts to comply with State and Federal administrative regulations so it could qualify for additional Federal and State dollars. Significant trends in 1992 included a continued high incidence of juvenile sex offenses and difficulties in the treatment of these cases; a significant increase in the number of girls involved in delinquent behavior; more court time and attorneys for complex cases of child abuse, dependency, and neglect; increased efforts to collect past-due support and court costs; an increase in cases involving juvenile drug abuse; and an increased number of parentage cases, with accompanying problems of child support and custody issues. 16 tables, a roster of court employees, and summaries of youth committed to the Ohio Department of Youth Services by the Huron County Juvenile Court in 1992
